History is a wonderful teacher, who always makes the subject matter interesting, entertaining, inspiring, and pertinent to both the present and the future. But it can be so hard, sometimes, to pay attention in the rowdy class. Certain students find a way, or come and see the teacher later when the noise thins out, and this is what history tells them…

History doesn’t repeat with precise timing or in the precise same way – it rhymes more than it repeats, as the saying sort of goes – and it helps, I think, to have an ear for it, or try to. But when the listening is hardest, with the classroom at its rowdiest, that is when it’s possible for some to really stand out.
